Privacy policy

Last updated: October 21, 2026

This policy explains what Lecquiz collects, why, who helps us process it, and the choices you have. We collect what we need to run the service and nothing we plan to sell.

What we collect

  • Account details: your name, email address and a hashed password. We email you a short confirmation code to verify your address.
  • Lectures you upload: audio or video files, the title you give them, and the transcript and cards generated from them.
  • Books: the ISBNs and titles you search for, the books you add, and the table-of-contents lists you confirm. Photos of contents pages are read and discarded; we never store them.
  • Courses: the college and course number you choose, the term and section label you type, the topic outlines you add, and your "this matches my class" confirmations. Photos of syllabi are read and discarded; we keep only the list of weeks and topics, and we ask the reader to leave out names, emails, office hours, grading and dates.
  • Quizzes: questions you create, paste or save, and the share codes attached to them. Text you paste for import is used to build the quiz and is not itself stored.
  • Messages to us: what you write in the contact form, plus your name and email so we can reply.
  • Technical data: IP address, browser type and basic request logs, used for security, rate limiting and troubleshooting. Our session cookie keeps you logged in.

How we use it

  • To provide the service: transcribe lectures, generate and display cards and quizzes, and let you share quizzes.
  • To keep your account secure and prevent abuse.
  • To respond to your messages and send account emails such as confirmation codes.
  • To fix bugs and improve Lecquiz.

We do not sell your personal information and we do not show advertising.

Service providers who process data for us

We send data to these providers only as needed to run the features you use:

  • Deepgram receives the audio from lectures you upload, to produce a transcript. Deepgram handles that audio under its own terms and privacy commitments, which may allow it to retain it or use it to improve its services. Please review its policy before uploading anything sensitive.
  • Anthropic receives transcript text, quiz text you ask us to structure with AI, the photos of contents pages you upload, and book titles and chapter lists, to clean transcripts, read contents pages, draft cards and format quizzes.
  • Google Books and Open Library receive the ISBN or title you search for, to find the book's details. They don't receive your account details.
  • Resend delivers our email, including confirmation codes and contact-form messages.
  • Cloudflare and our hosting provider serve the website and process request traffic.

These providers act on our instructions under their own terms and privacy commitments. Please review their policies if you have concerns about a particular upload.

How long we keep it

  • Lecture recordings are deleted from our servers as soon as they have been transcribed, or immediately if processing fails. We do not keep recordings for re-processing, and we have no re-transcribe option. If a long recording fails partway, we keep the text of the parts that were already transcribed so you can make cards from them instead of starting over; if nothing was finished you upload the file again. An unfinished upload is kept for a few hours so a dropped connection can resume, and an automatic cleanup removes any leftover audio within hours if a technical fault ever prevents the normal deletion.
  • Transcripts and cards are kept in your account until you delete the lecture or your account.
  • Course outlines you add are visible to other signed-in students who add the same college and course number, so they can confirm or adjust them. They show the topics, the term and section label, how many students confirmed, and when, but never your name or email. Outlines marked "use this only for me" are never shared. You can ask us to delete an outline you added.
  • Contents photos are not stored at all. A confirmed contents list is kept with the book, and unless you chose "use this list only for me" it is shared with other users who add the same edition. It contains chapter titles only, never your name. Removing a book from your list leaves the shared contents in place for others.
  • Quizzes are kept until you delete them. Deleting a quiz or revoking its share code stops sharing it.
  • Confirmation codes expire within minutes.
  • Contact messages are kept as long as needed to handle your request.

Sharing quizzes

Anyone who has a quiz's three-word code can open that quiz without an account. Do not put sensitive or private information in a quiz you share. You can revoke or regenerate a code at any time.

Copyright notices

If someone files a copyright notice, or a user files a counter-notice, the law requires us to share the other party's contact details with them: the claimant's name, address, phone and email go to the affected user, and a user's name, address, phone and email go to the claimant. We keep notices, counter-notices and a record of what we did about them for as long as needed to show we followed the process, and we may report them to the Lumen database or similar projects.

Public quizzes

You can choose to make a quiz public. A public quiz appears on our Explore page, has its own web address, and can be found by search engines. Anyone can take it without an account. We never show your name or email on it, and we never show your transcripts. If you also choose to show the flashcards it was built from, those cards are visible too. Only publish material you have the right to share. You can make a quiz private again at any time; it stops being listed and its address stops working, though a search engine may keep an old copy for a while. Anyone can report a public quiz, and a quiz reported by several different people is hidden while we review it.

The shared answer bank

To help write believable wrong answers for multiple-choice questions, Lecquiz keeps a shared bank of answer choices grouped by topic, along with counts of how often each was shown and picked. It holds only the short answer text and those counts, never your name, the question wording, or your lectures. When you create a quiz by hand you can turn off "Contribute answers to the shared answer bank" on the form, and quizzes made from a deck only contribute if you tick the box. Answers already in the bank cannot be traced back to you, so they stay when you delete a quiz.

Your choices

  • Edit or delete cards, lectures and quizzes from your account at any time.
  • Ask us to access, correct or delete your personal data, or to close your account, through our contact page (choose "Privacy or data request").
  • Depending on where you live, you may have additional rights under laws such as the GDPR or the CCPA. We will honor valid requests.

Security

We use encrypted connections (HTTPS), hashed passwords, rate limiting on sign-in and code entry, and access checks so that you can only open your own lectures and quizzes. No system is perfectly secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security.

Children and schools

Lecquiz is intended for users 13 and older. If you are under 18, please use it with a parent's or guardian's permission. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13; if you believe we have, contact us and we will delete it. If your school or district wants to use Lecquiz and needs specific student-privacy terms, please get in touch first.

Changes to this policy

If we make material changes we will update the date above and, where appropriate, notify you by email or in the app.
